One of the last stops was the Pools of Ohe’o. When a retired airline executive from the mainland named Sam Pryor planned to build a house right near the pools in 1960, articles began to appear in local papers warning that access to the pools would become a thing of the past, Pryor realized that the pools were so beloved by residents that he contracted the people who sold him the land and insisted that they trade it for land elsewhere, saying the pools should belong to everyone. He later contracted his old friend Laurance Rockefeller and convinced him to buy 52 acres around the pools and eventually donate it to Haleakala National Park. So today, the pools are forever protected. It starts with a large waterfall then a pool, another waterfall and a pool etc… flowing down to the lave rock ocean. Michael and I decided the boys would really love this place! We then headed back to the hotel it took about 2 ½ hours on the winding road. Good thing neither of us gets car sick. Oh my gosh I kept thinking when will we be there!!
